FORMER ethics minister Miria Matembe has shifted from Mbarara and registered as a voter in Bushenyi district. Matembe, also the former Woman MP for Mbarara district, registered on Tuesday in Tank Hill in Ward II in Bushenyi town.

Matembe’s move comes at a time when the split of Bushenyi district has changed the political landscape with Bushenyi/Ishaka town council being uplifted to a municipality status by Parliament.

Although Matembe was born in Kashari, Mbarara district, she and her husband, Nekemia Matembe, have a residence in Tank Hill. Nekemia is a former member of the Bushenyi district service commission.

Speaking to The New Vision on Wednesday, Matembe, however, declined to explain reasons why she registered in Bushenyi.

In 2006, she contested as an independent candidate in Mbarara and lost. The law allows a registered voter to contest for an elective position in any part of the country.

Matembe lashed out at the Electoral Commission over the ongoing voter registration exercise.

“When I turned up to register, I saw some youth crying because they were turned away, yet they are remaining with one, two or three months to make 18 years,” Matembe said.

She argued that a person who will be 18 years by the time of voting in 2011 should not be denied registration. Matembe said she would consult her lawyers over the matter.

Woman MP Susan Nakawuki (FDC) for Busiro East in Wakiso district last week registered as a voter in Masaka municipality, prompting speculation that she might stand for the municipality seat, currently occupied by John Baptist Kawanga.
