THE Peoples Development Party president, Abed Bwanika, has criticised the recent opinion polls released in The Daily Monitor, saying the intention was to promote the Inter Party Coalition (IPC).

Bwanika said the media house is biased and supports the IPC.

“Monitor has for a long time shown that it is behind FDC, which is the brain child of IPC. That is why the polls showed Besigye with 35%. It is sending a message to us who don’t believe in the coalition to join the IPC,” Bwanika said.

The poll, which was conducted between April 19 and May 6 by TNS/ Research International, was commissioned by The Daily Monitor and the Deepening Democracy Programme.

According to the polls, if elections were held on the day of the interviews 43 % would have voted for President Yoweri Museveni, 35% for Kizza Besigye and 4% for Olara Otuunu and Norbert Mao.

Bwanika, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali and Maj. Mugisha Muntu got 1%.

During a press conference at Tarvin Hotel in Kampala on Thursday, Bwanika said: “The polls don’t reflect what is on the ground. It shows that some individuals sat in their offices and came out with the statistics.”

He said credible agencies should carry out polls to give Ugandans a clear picture of what is likely to come out of next year’s elections.

Commenting on the role of donors in Ugandan politics, Bwanika said they should play a bigger role since they finance the electoral processes. “If Museveni does not want donors to comment on the loopholes in the electoral processes, the Government should reject their funds.”

The former presidential candidate said development cannot be achieved under bad governance.
