GODFREY Nyakana is the duly recognised national amateur boxing federation president, according to state sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi.
In a three-page letter to the international amateur boxing body –– AIBA on May 6, also copied to the continental association, Bakkabulindi stated government’s position clearly after giving the chronology of the wrangles from 2005.
He called on AIBA to send an official to Uganda soon to study the situation.
“Having satisfied myself that the elections (that brought in Nyakana to office) were carried out to the letter and spirit of the amended constitution, the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Education and sports, and under it, the National Council of Sports does recognise the Nyakana led executive as the true leaders of the Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation,†read part of the letter.
The letter is a climax of counter accusations between the former executive led by Dr. Ntege Ssengendo and Nyakana’s executive. AIBA refused to recognise Nyakana’s faction and the Uganda Olympic Committee dropped boxing from the October Commonwealth Games.
“Some members of the former executive have gone to courts of judicature and are challenging the process by which the current executive has been in place. I cannot comment on the merits of their case, since the matter is before Court and therefore sub judice.â€
Bakkabulindi noted that AIBA, as an institution, had been drawn and probably inadvertently into the local wrangles in the amateur sport, which position is putting them in direct contradiction and/or confrontation with the position of the Government of the Republic of Uganda.
He said it is the National Council of Sports, rather than the Uganda Olympic Committee, that is mandated to endorse the various national sports federations.
