Feedback: Thank you for pointing out the unfairness in schools

Jun 08, 2010

I must express my gratitude over the story about St. Mary’s Kitende. I agree the school is private but the students are not. Not that I have any child, relative or friend at Kitende but the unfairness in the education sector is too much. I have a niece at a school on Entebbe Road.

I must express my gratitude over the story about St. Mary’s Kitende. I agree the school is private but the students are not. Not that I have any child, relative or friend at Kitende but the unfairness in the education sector is too much. I have a niece at a school on Entebbe Road. We pay about sh60,000 for a trip to the zoo in Entebbe. But when I go with them, as a family, we spend sh40,000-70,000 including meals. So how come the school trip costs much more for one person than when a whole family visits the same place? Thank you for highlighting the issue.

IT is true that St Mary’s Kitende has been making parties, field trips and so on without charging parents and I thank the school for that. But is it also true and painful that the school has been increasing fees every term probably to meet the so-called trips and party expenses.
Many children were sent home on reporting day for not paying the sh50,000 per child for the party. The first thing asked on arrival at the school was the sh50,000. On inquiry, we were told that it was compulsory to pay that money on day one. Asked why all that amount, we were told that the balance of the money was for completing the stadium at the school. Many parents had to rush to nearby ATMs to withdraw the money. Those who had no money had to take their children back home. The school should learn to respect his clients (parents) and hold consultative meetings with them. Ever since my children joined Kitende five years ago, there has never been any PTA meeting.

MY child was sent away on Monday and by God’s grace another parent donated the sh50,000. It is hypocritical to call us parents “an insignificant number”. Maybe he is insisting on the money to pay for the final touches of the school block or the pavilion of the football pitch, or more bizarre, he needs to pre-pay for the school football team that he is funding to the world cup. If the school is as generous as it is claimed, how come this time parents were forced to contribute? Why couldn’t the school just forget the “insignificant” few parents who could not afford the contribution?
