Nganwa High school in Bushenyi district was on Tuesday closed after students burnt the school administration block, accusing the school dministration of refusing them to watch the World Cup matches.

The burnt block houses the headmaster’s office, the staff room, the bursar and the deputy headmaster’s offices.
The students reportedly set the block ablaze at around 1:00pm, burning all the school documents since its inception in the early 1970s.

The rioting students then attacked the deputy headmaster, Joram Turyabo’s residence, smashing the windscreen of his vehicle. He, however, escaped unhurt.

The situation was calmed down when the Police arrived at the school.

Addressing the students and teachers, the south-western regional deputy Police commander, Christopher Rugumayo, advised the students to persuade the administration to attend to their problems instead of destroying property.

The deputy resident district commissioner, Nickson Kabuye, condemned the students act, saying: “You have turned yourselves into arsonists.”

The district education officer, Norman Lukum, ordered the school to be closed for 10 days to enable the administration and security agencies carry out investigations.

Lukum said it was unfortunate that such an incident happened in a school like Nganwa.

“We have not had destruction of such nature in the district,” he noted.
Lukum asked the school administration to critically look into the issues raised by the students.
