OVER 700 primary school girls in Soroti district have dropped out due to pregnancy and early marriages, the district LC5 vice-chairperson has disclosed.

Daniel Ewadu, who is also the secretary for children and women affairs, said most of the pupils are 14 years old and below. He made the disclosure last week at the end of a training workshop in advocating for children’s rights at Lukiko hall, organised by Hope After Rape, an NGO in Soroti.

The training, attended by district leaders and district human rights activists, was called to determine the cause of the high school drop-out rate of girls. Ewadu said the figures were from a survey conducted by an NGO in 2008-2009

He attributed the increasing numbers to the LCs who do not report defilement cases to the concerned authorities. Ewadu said out of the 10 sub-counties in Soroti, Gweri, Arapai, Kamuda and Asuret had the biggest number of school drop-outs.

He identified the worst hit schools as Gweri, Kamuda and Arapai primary schools.
