THE Uganda Land Commission chairman, Mayanja Nkangi, has said he is still a member of the Conservative Party (CP), despite serving under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

Responding to remarks made by deputy secretary general of the Forum for Democratic Change Augustine Ruzindana in a column in The Daily Monitor yesterday, Nkangi said President Yoweri Museveni appointed him knowing he is a member of CP.

In his column, Ruzindana said when the two other former Buganda premiers, Mulwannyammuli Ssemogerere and Dan Muliika, allied with the opposition, President Yoweri Museveni took offence at Mengo, but sees no wrong when Nkangi, also a former premier, “joined” NRM.

“I started with CP in 1980 long before NRM came into power. When they took over in 1986, I was invited to be minister as a CP delegate and held several portfolios.

“Being part of the Government did not make me NRM in any way just like former Democratic Party president Paul Ssemogerere,” he said.

He said he agreed with the Movement on policies, but his political ideology never changed.

Nkangi announced that he is the patron of CP after John Ken Lukyamuzi took over it’s presidency six years ago.
