THE European Union (EU) is to launch an agricultural enhancement project worth 20m euros (about sh55b) in northern Uganda in September, the ambassador to Uganda, Vincent De Visscher, has said.

He said districts in Acholi sub-region and selected ones in Lango and Teso sub-regions will benefit from the four-year project.

De Visscher was speaking at the Acholi chiefdom palace in Kanyagoga parish in Gulu municipality last week.

The Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme (NUREP) regional co-ordinator, Adolf Gerstl, said most households in the north derive income from agricultural activities.

“We have wound up most of our activities under NUREP. Leaving the region without supporting its agricultural sector would make the population vulnerable, since most of them have just returned home. We want to provide easy access to agricultural inputs and train people to market their products,’’ he said

Gerstl noted that the project would support seed distribution, supply of farm implements, animal restocking and marketing of products.

He said the project, whose implementation begins in January, would replace NUREP, which will be phased out at the end of the month.

The EU also donated items worth sh23m to the Acholi chiefdom to support its campaign against gender-based violence.

De Visscher handed over the items, which included bicycles, a public address system, a laptop and plastic chairs, to Rwot David Acana.

The Rwot hailed the EU for the aid.
