THE remains of over 4,000 Rwandan genocide victims were on Friday re-buried in three mass graves in Ggolo, in Mpigi district, marking the end of the re-burying exercise in Uganda.

The remains were exhumed from Dimo and Malembo in Masaka district.

This brings the total number of the genocide victims buried in Ggolo to 5,000.

Ggolo is one of the three designated memorial sites where some of the over 10,000 genocide victims, who were killed and thrown into different tributaries of Lake Victoria, were buried.

The other sites are Kasensero in Rakai district and Lambu in Masaka.

Several Rwandan dignitaries, led by the ambassador to Uganda, Maj. Gen. Frank Mugambage, senior officials from the Government of Uganda, as well as survivors of the 1994 genocide attended the function.

“Today marks the end of the re-burying exercise of our dear ones in Uganda. However, this does not mean we have stopped the search. We shall continue looking for our lost people to give them a decent burial,” Mugambage said.

He blamed the genocide on bad leadership, which he said had promoted tribalism, segregation and division among the Rwandans.
