Security agencies in Teso region have discovered military ware in a bush in Usuk sub-county in Katakwi district. The UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson, Capt. Henry Obbo, said the items included one sub-machine gun with 234 bullets, eight pairs of military uniform and six empty magazines.

Others were a military bottle, rain coat and mess tin. Obbo said the items could have been abandoned by an army deserter.

“We think one of the long-serving soldiers might have done this to avoid Operation Pressure, which was set up to restore peace in Teso,” Obbo explained. He said they would carry out investigations to find out which soldier was responsible.

Obbo ruled out the possibility of rebels regrouping in Teso. Operation Pressure, he said, also aimed at recovering illegal military equipment.

“A total of 350 illegal guns have been collected in the region since the army launched the operation two years ago,” Obbo said. Citing last week’s incident where a bus was shot at in Bukedea trading centre, injuring four passengers, Obbo said there was need for a new military approach to disarm those in possession of illegal arms.
