THE House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has finally cleared the consecration of Rev. Can. Bernard Bagaba as the second bishop of Kinkiizi Diocese.

Bagaba’s consecration, which is slated for October 10 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Nyakatare, Kanungu, had been halted following accusations of fathering two children outside wedlock.

Leadership Concern Forum, a group opposed to Bagaba’s consecration, petitioned the Anglican leader, Archbishop Luke Orombi, to look into Bagaba’s moral integrity. This forced the Anglican leadership to postpone his consecration which was due on May 9.

“The House, chaired by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, received the results of a DNA paternity test which indicated that Bagaba did not father the two children in question,” according to a statement signed by Can. George Bagamuhunda, the provincial secretary.

The statement added that the decision was arrived at during the House of Bishops meeting held on Friday at Lweza Training and Conference Centre.

The bishops requested that a process of reconciliation among the Christians of Kinkiizi Diocese be initiated by the retiring bishop, the Rt. Rev. John Ntegyereize.

There were allegations that the group opposed to Bagaba’s consecration had bribed a woman with sh2.5m to tarnish the name of the bishop-elect.

The group insisted on another DNA test claiming that the first one was manipulated, an allegation that the House of Bishops has denied.

The bishops also elected the Rev. Can. James Ssebaggala as the 4th Bishop of Mukono Diocese, replacing the Rt. Rev. Eria Paul Luzinda Kizito.

He will be consecrated and enthroned at Saints Philip and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono on September 19.
