THE High Court in Jinja district has sentenced a man to 28 years in prison for murder.Paul Buwaso, 27, murdered Patrick Byansi, 60, on May 11, 2009 in Buwenge town council, Jinja district.

Court heard that on the fateful day at around 7:30pm, Buwaso, armed with a panga, went to his landlord’s house, but found the landlord’s daughter, Kolosy Bufundu, whom he told that he was going to kill Byansi. He accused Byansi of having an affair with his wife.

Buwaso then proceeded to Buwenge town council market, where Byansi was working and chased after him.

Residents later discovered Byansi’s body at Madarazati Primary School in Buwenge town council.

Byansi’s hand and throat had been slit, while his skull bore a large wound.

After the incident, Buwaso went into hiding at the home of his sister, only identified as Nambi, where he washed off the blood that had splashed on him and cleaned the panga.

Buwaso confessed to his sister that he had committed murder.

He was later arrested by the Police in Buwenge town council. A mental examination showed that Buwaso was of sound mind.

The counsel for Buwaso pleaded with Justice Elizabeth Ibanda Nahamya to give him a lighter sentence, saying he has a family of three children to take care of and that he was a first-time offender.

Nahamya, while passing her judgment, told Byansi: “You have denied the deceased the right to take care of his family and his children to enjoy his love. You have put a curse on his children.”

Nahamya added that God created life to be honoured, not to be played with.

He noted that Buwaso’s 28-year sentence would serve as a warning to people who take the law into their own hands.

Nahamya said she had considered the one year Buwaso had spent on remand at Kirinya Prisons.
