Christians of Kinkiizi Diocese in Kanungu district have welcomed the decision by the House of Bishops to uphold the consecration and enthronement of the bishop-elect, Bernard Bagaba.

Bagaba’s consecration was postponed by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi, in April after he received a petition from a group of Christians calling themselves the Leadership Concern Fellowship, who asked him not to proceed with the ceremony.

The group said Bagaba was not fit to become bishop because he reportedly had two children outside wedlock.

However, when the House of Bishops made independent investigations, which included taking a DNA test, it was found that Bagaba was not the father of the children.

The Archbishop also sent a team of five bishops led by Kigezi diocesan bishop, the Rt. Rev. George Katwesigye, on June 21 to establish if the bishop was being imposed on the Christians as had been alleged by the group.

The Christians, however, said they had no problem with Bagaba.

The head of the laity, Can. Charles Byarugaba, on Tuesday said preparations had been completed and over sh400m had been collected for the consecration.
If enthroned, Bagaba will be the second bishop of the diocese, which was curved out of North Kigezi in 1995. The outgoing bishop is the Rt. Rev. John Wilson Ntegeryeize.
