THOSE who saw Ugandan Deo Akope at the Uganda Golf Course on Saturday must have recalled the 2000 Uganda Open. The ‘Yellow Boy’ relived his form of 10 years on the final day, firing six under par 66 and rising from sixth to finish second in the Kampala leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour.

Akope, famed for his ability to fight back, was in sparkling form on the final day with an aggregate of 281, just one stroke behind the eventual winner Kenyan Dismas Indiza.

In the 2000 Uganda Open, Akope shot a similar score to overhaul Stephen Birungi and claim the title.

Akope, the only Ugandan in the top 10 birdied hole 14 to go seven under but bogeyed the next for Indiza to regain the lead. The Kenyan held on to snatch the sh5.3m top prize.

“I had a great game save for that bogey which spoilt the party. I was aiming at breaking the course record of 64 and win at home. I enjoyed the competition and I hope to take on our brothers from Kenya in Mombasa next month,” Akope remarked.

Kenyan Simon Ngigi was third while his compatriots Ali Kimani and Kopan Timbe shared fourth position in the sh28m event.

The grand finale of the regional tour will be in Mombasa where over sh200m will be won in cash prizes.
