A total of 984 students were awarded diplomas and degrees at the 11th graduation ceremony of Uganda Christian University Mukono on Friday. A total of 511 of them were female.

The ceremony, presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Luke Orombi, saw 11 students receiving plaques for getting first class degrees.

A total of 25 graduands were awarded masters degrees, 852 bachelors degrees, four got postgraduate diplomas and 103 received diplomas.

Daniel Owor Onyanya, one of the students who got a first class degree, said he worked most of the time in Karamoja to raise his tuition, adding that he did not expect to excel.

Jimmy Namonyo was the best male student with 4.71 points, while Elizabeth Nakawombe was the best female student with 4.64 points. The highest number of points a student can get are five.

The outgoing vice-chancellor, the Rev. Prof. Stephen Noll, thanked the Government for its support to the institution. “I was privileged to be installed as vice-chancellor at the very first graduation in 2000. A lot has happened in those 10 years,” Noll said.

He will be replaced by the Rev. Can. Dr. John Senyonyi, who will be installed during the 12th graduation of the university in September this year.

Noll said the university was setting up a modern science laboratory for physics, biology and chemistry, and urged the graduands to be hopeful that they would get jobs.

“I know it is not an easy job market out there for those of you who leave today, but I want to encourage you to be positive,” he said.

Orombi thanked Noll for his work at the university and described him as a selfless and energetic man.
He also urged the graduands to recognise the support provided to them by their parents and guardians.

“You must never forget what your parents have given up to help you become what you are now,” he told the graduands, appealed to them to live exemplary lives to promote the university.
