THE Uganda National Roads Authority has given out 80 contracts for the 2010/2011 financial year.

According to Dan Alinange, the spokesperson, most works will involve road maintenance.

The contracts are estimated at about $500m, he said on Tuesday.
He, however, explained that some of the contracts were awarded in the last financial year.

Some of the ongoing road maintenance works include the re-sealing of 400km national roads like the Lira-Kamdini-Kawith road, the Kampala-Mukono, Kampala-Kawempe, Masaka-Kyotera and the Mbarara-Ishaka roads.

Tarmacking and rehabilitation of the Fort Portal-Bundibugyo-Lamia road, Mbarara-Kikagati, the Gulu-Atiak-Bibia-Nimule, Mukono-Jinja, Tororo-Mbale- Soroti commence this fiscal year.

Other roads that will be completed in 2010 include the Masaka-Mbarara, Matugga-Ssemuto-Kapeeka, Kampala-Mityana and Kampala-Gayaza- Zirobwe roads.

Alinange also revealed that pre-qualification of companies for the construction of Mpigi-Gomba was ongoing.

“The exercise will be completed next month to allow construction to begin December this year,” he said.

The roads agency is also working on the compensation of the people that will be affected by the projects.

“We have already informed the people and most of them know what is going on,” he said.
