President Yoweri Museveni has said killers should not be forgiven. The President said while dealing with criminals, the Biblical law of Moses, which says “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” would apply.

Museveni was speaking at the requiem mass of Nicholas Odeke Lakara Emeru, son of Brig. Nakibus Lakara, at Christ the King church in Kampala.

Odeke, 25, was shot on Saturday morning when Karimojong warriors fired at a wedding convoy at Kyamukuku grazing area on the Kotido-Abim road.

Odeke was to graduate from the Law Development Centre and would continue working in Kotido district. Referring to the liberation guerilla war times, the President said fighters who killed innocent civilians were given the death penalty, a move which has instilled discipline among the Forces.

“I don’t believe in forgiveness, but I don’t intend to interfere with the role of the Church, which preaches forgiveness. The peace Uganda is enjoying is because we took the line of an eye for an eye”, he said.

The President said two people have been arrested in connection with Odeke’s killing, while a third is being hunted. Museveni asked the judiciary to wind up the hearings of the suspects within six months, saying the criminals should be hanged thereafter.
