STATE sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi plans to lobby for the participation of Ugandan boxers at the Commonwealth Games set for India in October.

Addressing a press conference in Kampala yesterday, the minister said he will soon initiate contact with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the organisers of the games to include boxing.

“It is not all lost. We will push to see that boxers are given a chance to compete,” Bakkabulindi said.

Uganda was left out after boxing’s world body AIBA refused to recognise the Godfrey Nyakana led faction of the local body UABF.

Nyakana, a former national boxer and professional, is battling with the faction of Dr. Ntege Ssengendo over control of the sport.

Ssengendo’s group is recognised by AIBA. The wrangles have brought action in the country to a near halt.

Boxing has provided medals for the country at past major international events including the Olympics.
