NATIONAL golf championship leader Brian Mwesigwa is eyeing a second successive victory at the Mehta Open that starts in Lugazi today.

“It is a difficult course, but I am ready to overcome it and win the tournament for the second year running,” Mwesigwa said yesterday.

“The biggest threat will come from Stephen Kasaija and I will have to keep him at bay.”

Mwesigwa leads the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play contest with 19 points, two clear of Stephen Odong.

The leader, a member of Uganda Golf Club (UGC) has accumulated his tally having finished the previous three tournaments among the top three.

He has been in blistering form since switching from Kabale to the UGC, He has won several MTN mugs but is yet to land a major event on the UGU calendar.

“I am looking forward to a tight race in Lugazi and I hope to keep my game plan intact so as to win on that course,” Mwesigwa added.

“My aim is to maintain the lead in the standings.”

He faces stiff competition from Emma Opio, Grace Ocici, Fred Wanzala, Said Mawa and Ian Odokonyero who have always fared well in this tournament. The two- day tournament ends tomorrow.

The event is one of many spread all year round. The player with the highest number of points after the last event is declared national champion.
