<b>Man jailed for defilement</b> <br>MUKONO - The High Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 10 years in jail for defiling a nine-year-old girl. John Kato of Kanyogoga village in Nagojje sub-county committed the offence on July 22, 2007.

MUKONO - The High Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 10 years in jail for defiling a nine-year-old girl. John Kato of Kanyogoga village in Nagojje sub-county committed the offence on July 22, 2007. Prosecution told the court that Kato followed the victim to the toilet, where she had gone to ease herself, and forcefully had sex with her. The victim made an alarm that attracted neighbours, who netted Kato and handed him to the Police.

Court to rule on talk-show ban

KAMPALA - The High Court last Thursday referred the case regarding the ban on open talk-shows for judicial review by the Constitutional Court after controversy arose on where it should be heard. On January 19, Rubaga Division councillor Church Ambrose Bukenya asked the court to order the Government to lift the ban.

Ugandan to head rotary

ETHIoPIA - A Ugandan businessman, Steven Mwanje, has been inaugurated as the new Rotary District 2900 Governor for 2010/2011. District 9200 comprises Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with 112 active rotary clubs. Mwanje, 51, becomes the seventh Ugandan District Governor 2900 after Sam Awori, who had held the position since 1987. Mwanje was elected at the 85th district conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last week.

‘Prisons need health funds’

KAMPALA - Countries have been urged to consider prisons while applying for global funds for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. The call was made by Dr. Fabienne Hariga of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. “It is unfortunate that most countries do not consider prisons while applying for funds, forgetting they are a breeding ground for diseases,” Hariga said.
