SECURITY at Entebbe International airport was has been increased with several security checks conducted across the airport. At the arrival and departure lounges, passengers are subjected to intense screening.

Besides removing belts, and shoes, passengers are photographed, which immigration officials said was for their database.

The airport aviation commandant, Beata Chelimo, yesterday defended the intense screening, saying it was meant to cover loopholes.

“We cannot take chances. We are not screening according to race or religion. Everyone leaving or entering the country must be checked and photographed,” she explained.

The Civil Aviation Authority head of operations, Wilson Owere, added: “The photographing is specially for foreigners entering the country. The information is stored in the immigration department database.”

According to security sources, the airport security has been tightened in preparation for the arrival of the African heads of state as the country prepares to host the African Union Summit this weekend.

“Security can longer be compromised. We are hosting over 40 presidents and we must ensure their safety,” said a source at the airport.
