THE Army has vowed to track down and fight perpetrators of the July 11 twin bombings that ripped through the city, killing about 75 World Cup fans.

Speaking at the ceremony where 497 UPDF soldiers received pips at the army headquarters in Bombo, the land forces commander, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, vowed that the army would hunt and fight the terrorists directly or by proxy.

“We will not rest until whoever is responsible pays. Our people have not died in vain,” he said.

Katumba promised that the army was ready to work with other institutions in and out of the country to find the culprits who bombed the Ethiopian Village Restaurant in Kabalagala and Kyadondo Rugby Club in Lugogo.

He also challenged the heads of state gathered at Speak Resort Munyonyo for the African Union Summit, to send troops for the peace-keeping mission in Somalia.

Katumba pointed out that giving Uganda and Burundi forces in Somalia more mandate would not solve the problem.
Uganda has contributed close to 4,300 troops while Burundi sent about 2,000 soldiers. Ghana and Nigeria had promised to send troops but are yet to make good their promise.

The AU Security Council said it needs about 8,000 peacekeepers to restore peace in Somalia.

Among those promoted was Charles Olyet, who had served for less than nine years in the army. He died in the July 11 bombing at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
