Namboole trials key for Africa bid

THE national athletics team to represent Uganda at the Africa Senior Championships will use the track and field championships this weekend as the final trials before they leave for the continental meet in Nairobi.

The local championships that climaxes the 2010 national track and field season will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Athletes, Ali Ngaimoko, Waiswa Lukungu, Inya Lazarus, Ramadhan Akulla, Martin Achilla (sprinters), Jimmy Adar, Moses Kipsiro, steeplechasers Benjamin Kiplagat, Simon Ayeko, Ben Siwa among others will compete in the men’s category while Justine Bayigga, Emilly Nanziri, Mildred Gamba, Janet Achola, Juliet Chekwel, Aber Lucy, Sarah Nambawa will be looking for a good show in their respective events.

“We are eyeing at worst bronze medals and that is why these athletes will use the Namboole meet as their final tune up,” team manager Apollo Musherure said.

The national championships will also give opportunity to those athletes that failed to qualify for the meet to make the required grade for the October 2010 Commonwealth Games due in New Delhi, India.

State minister for sports, Charles Bakabulindi will flag off the team to Nairobi immediately after the closing ceremony at Namboole.
