SOUTH African-based Nelson Cadri will not only bring experience and confidence to the U-19 national rugby team but also lead the side in their quest to win the 2010 Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Cup tournament.

Cadri, a former student of King’s College Budo and now studying at the Cape Town University of South Africa, was handed the team captain’s armband.

The 24-man squad with six officials leaves on Friday for Abidjan, Ivory Coast, for the tournament that runs July 24-31. US-based Samuel Barong is also on the team.

According to the rugby development manager Ramsey Olinga, Cadri and Barong were playing in Uganda before and found it easy to adopt.

“Cadri has played with these boys before and he knows their character well. He has leadership skills and that is why we handed him the armband,” Olinga explained.

The tournament kicks of on Saturday with hosts Ivory Coast taking on defending champions Zimbabwe in an early game before Uganda plays Kenya at 4:30pm.

Last year, Uganda finished fourth after losing to champions Zimbabwe in the semi-finals in Kenya.
