It is possible to join university with your O’level results. Vincent Ekwang, Makerere University’s deputy registrar, says you can be admitted if you apply through the mature age entry scheme, under which the minimum admission requirement is 25 years of age. However, he says for a candidate to qualify for entry to university, they must sit and pass the university mature entry examination, which is an aptitude test set by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). After the exam, candidates are also subjected to a second test that is relevant to the course they applied for. If you pass this one, you will be admitted for the course.

Is a diploma from YMCA a viable ticket to university?
I am pursuing a diploma in computer science at YMCA in Wandegeya. However, my friend said it was not possible to be admitted to a public university using a diploma qualification from YMCA. Is this true?
Mike

YMCA is one of the diploma-awarding institutions that are accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). According to NCHE’s guidelines, graduates from accredited institutions are eligible for admission to university. However, Vincent Ekwang, Makerere University’s admissions chief, says you ought to get a second class or credit diploma to be eligible for admission. You can visit the council’s website: www.nche.ac.ug for more details.

You need to score at least two principal passes in A’level to be eligible for admission to university through the direct entry scheme, according to guidelines set by the National Council for Higher Education. Ann Mugerwa, the Kyambogo University academic registrar, says since you scored principal passes in physics and biology, you can try applying for courses like Bachelor of Science with education, library and information science, and records and archives management. Others include population studies and tourism. In order to secure a vacancy, Mugerwa advises that you look for universities that are not competitive because your cut-off weight is low. Alternatively, you can opt to begin with a diploma and upgrade later.

The minimum university admission requirement is two principal passes got in A’level. You are eligible for admission since you have three principal passes. At Makerere, one can study tourism, development studies, arts with arts, mass communication, community psychology, social work and social administration, social sciences and human resources management.
At Kyambogo, you can apply for adult and community education and development studies. You could also get more details of the course you would like to study from academic registrars of other universities.

What opportunities are there with food processing and technology?
I took BCM/Econ at A’level and would like to apply for food processing technology. What would be the qualifications and job opportunities?

At Makerere and Kyambogo universities, chemistry and biology are the essential subjects for admission to the bachelor of food processing technology course. But you could have an upper hand at Kyambogo than Makerere. This is because your combination lacks physics, agriculture and food and nutrition which Makerere treats as the relevant subjects. Graduates of food processing technology, according to Susan Among, a lecturer at Makerere, are employed in the beverages industry like soda companies. They also get jobs in food processing companies and food research laboratories.
