News that the Goat Races are back could not have come at a more perfect moment. The goat races which have been on a break for one year pending reconstruction at Munyonyo are back and probably expected to be bigger. The crowds are expected to exceed the 7,000 peak they were at in 2008.

The races are the one day of the year that fashion freaks in town are allowed to be liberal with clothing, colour and wide brimmed hats only rivalled by those at the Royal Ascot Horse Races in England.

As usual, corporate sponsors are already staking claim to the races. A prominent hotel has put down sh6m on one of the goats that will be racing that day.

The Royal Ascot Goat Races that take place in Munyoyo attract the who is who in the financial, entertainment and fashion circles in town.

Top on the agenda is having fun, networking, drinking and eating. If you have any place in society, you better be invited inside one of the sponsor tents.

Some goat race enthusiasts have already taken to the social networking site Facebook and opened up a fan page for the fun day.

Already, over 150 Facebook users have registered as goat racing fans at the site. But this day is not just about fun. A lot of money is expected to be raised for some charities such as Katalemwa Cheshire Home, Daughters of Charity, Kids League and Salama School for the Blind.

In 2008, when the races were last held, the Royal Ascot Goat Races donated sh15m. So, go and have that ridiculous hat sewn, dust your sun dresses and flip flops because come September at Munyonyo, fashion-wise, you will be competing with the best.

Let us just hope the goats are in their best shape because people have been waiting a long time to see them run, or trot.
