Enact law against cemented graves

EDITOR—A lot has been written about the way we bury our loved ones. The ‘well to do’ have taken to burying their dead in an expensive and showy manner to project their class in society, hence the tile, marble and cemented graves.

Whereas all of us should have utmost respect for our departed ones, the way we bury them should not turn planet earth into doted stones which will render useless big chunks of arable and habitable land.

Mere campaign by NGOs and NEMA may not be heeded because the mindset of many people in our society is bent on extravagance, and cheap competition even in things that may permanently destroy our environment!

That is why we have extravagant introduction ceremonies, weddings, graduations, etc. Now the habit has extended to funerals and burials. It is therefore critical that concerned agencies like NEMA spearhead the formulation of laws that will prohibit burial in concrete or cemented graves.

This may initially be resisted but we need to preserve mother Earth for the future generations. Had our ancestors who lived millions of years ago buried their dead the same way we are doing today, where would we have found space now for cultivation or shelter?
