SIX candidates are in the race for Kitagwenda County in Kamwenge district. Nuru Byamukama, the incumbent, has to face Abbas Agaba, a lecturer at Kampala International University; George Spencer, a lawyer; Grim Twongirwe, a sociologist and Justus Mwekambi a clinical officer, all from the NRM. There is also FDC’s Joseph Ruhweza.

Agaba says he will improve the health sector and use his leadership skills to pull Kitagwenda out of poverty.

Agaba, who has been distributing sports equipment to schools, beseeched voters not to elect candidates based on their wealth. He was responding to voters who said Byamukama is dishing out money. “We call him cash-cash and he gives it to us,” one of the locals said.

The other candidate, Mwekambi, is a former Kamwenge district vice-chairperson. He is favoured by the fishing community on Kayinja and Mahyoro landing sites on Lake George because he grew up there.

Mwekambi boasts of having repaired Kamayenje-Kiburara, Kitoro-Rutoma and Mbuyabuye-Kengyeya bridges, constructing the Nyamutwijo-Bukurungo Road and sensitising communities on health issues over the radio.

Spencer, another aspirant, contested as an independent in 2006. He claims his objective then was to introduce himself to the electorate.

He says he plans to improve the education sector and embark on tree planting.

Joseph Ruhweza, a former speaker to the greater Kabarole, accuses Byamukama of neglecting education and health. He adds that there are roads which have not been rehabilitated in 10 years and are impassable.

Grim Twongirwe, a graduate of sociology and micro-finance, is also in the race after failing twice to become Kamwenge district chairman. Twongirwe’s manifesto includes bringing peace, unity and development to Kitagwenda.

Meanwhile, Byamukama is not perturbed by his rivals. He says he will be an MP for as long he wants. “I will win this election with 90% of the votes,” he boasts.

A businessman, Byamukama owns two radio stations in Mbarara town, Endigito Radio and Love FM and he also owns Endigito Bus Company. He says his buses transport students to school everyday and he gives his people free airtime on his radio stations to discuss pertinent issues.

He boasts of extending water to Kicheche, Buhanda, Ntara and Nyabani sub-counties. He says he has given 100 goats to every sub-county to fight poverty. He contributes handsomely to churches, schools and mosques.

“People know what I have done and they will send me back to Parliament,” he says.

Byamukama holds a degree in procurement from Kyambogo University.
He worked with Movit Company as a general manager before joining politics.
