MAKERERE University has received a $1.6m (about sh3.5b) grant to boost research. The grant was awarded to the Economic Policy Research Centre of Makerere University by the African Capacity Building Foundation.

The foundation, which was founded 19 years ago, is funded by the African Development Bank, the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme.

The research centre boss, Dr. Sarah Ssewanyana, said the four-year grant would enable her institution to contribute effectively to the national policy formulation and development process in Uganda.

She said the previous three grants from African Capacity Building Foundation had enabled them to conduct research studies that were instrumental in forming the Poverty Eradication Action Plan, the development of the National Development Plan, the Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture and the Health Sector Strategic Plan.

During the signing ceremony held at the research centre offices at Makerere, Dr. Frannie Leautier, the African Capacity Building Foundation executive secretary, represented her organisation, while Dr. Sarah Ssewanyana signed for Makerere.

Leautier hailed the research centre for properly utilising the previous grants, which she said had qualified Uganda to acquire another grant.

The Bank of Uganda governor, Tumusiime Mutebile, commended African Capacity Building Foundation for its support to Uganda.

He asked Ssewanyana to conduct research on why commercial bank lending rates were persistently high so as to find ways of lowering them and to sensitise the public, who are the major beneficiaries.
