THE High Court in Fort Portal has sentenced a 35-year-old man to jail for 22 years for aggravated defilement. Zaverio Barugahare, a resident of Kabingo trading centre in Kamwenge district, was on Wednesday sent to Katojo Prison for defiling and infecting two minors with HIV.

Court, presided over by Justice James Ogoola, proved that on August 8, 2009, Barugahare defiled a nine-year-old girl, a resident of the same area.

Barugahare grabbed the girl while on her way back home from the farm where she had been grazing goats and defiled her in a nearby bush.

The prosecution told court that after defiling the girl, Barugahare threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

However, due to the pain from her raptured private parts, the girl told her parents, who immediately reported to Kamwenge Police Station.

Prosecution added that when the girl’s parents and neighbours mounted a search for Barugahare, they found him defiling another girl aged 15 in his house.

Medical reports presented to court indicated that the nine-year-old girl had been defiled, while the 15-year-old was found to have been sexually used several times.

The report also revealed that Barugahare was HIV- positive.

Appearing before the court, Barugahare pleaded guilty to the charges and requested for a lenient sentence, saying his wife died of HIV when he was on remand and there was no one to look after his five children.

However, Justice Ogoola rejected Barugahare’s request, saying he intentionally infected the two minors with HIV, a sign of no mercy to the girls.
