BUSITEMA University is to start an institute of communications technology at its main campus in Tororo district.
The move was revealed after a meeting between the university management and a delegation from the Communication University of China, led by Prof. Ding Junjie, the university president.
“We are repositioning ourselves to embrace new and relevant academic programmes, equip students with knowledge and practical skills and establish partnerships,†Mary Okwakol, the Busitema vice-chancellor, said.
She noted that the institute will train students in research and outreach in information engineering and act as a centre for teaching international and regional languages.
The faculty of engineering dean, Dr. Samuel Kucel, emphasised that the project will provide training in telecommunications and electronics technologies, increase commercialisation of research findings and collaborative linkages, and enhance national and global collaborative networks with the public and private sectors.
Junjie commended the university for offering unique and relevant academic programmes.
He pledged his university’s support and promised to link Busitema to other universities in China, which will cover the academic areas his university cannot.
The two universities signed a memorandum of understanding, which focused on academic exchange programmes for staff and students.
