WORLD junior bronze medallist Annet Negesa and javelin thrower Annet Kabasindi are on the tentative athletics team of 13 for the Commonwealth Games.

The technical team will pick the final 11 later this month for the Games due in New Delhi, India, in October.

Africa triple jump champion Sarah Nambawa had already made the team with the federation promising her a round trip ticket from America.
The committee met on Wednesday and zeroed on Negesa, a fast improving young athlete over the 800m. They also entered Janet Achola as Negesa’s partner.

Also on the team is experienced Geoffrey Kusuro. He will run alongside Moses Kipsiro, as the latter goes for a double in the 5000m and 10000m at the Club Games. Benjamin Kiplagat has been entered for the 3000m steeplechase event.

“We are still consulting. We will come out with the final list after all parties have been consulted,” local athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru explained yesterday.

Annet Kabasindi, who threw 50.6m in the Africa Senior Championships, is on the list together with sprinters Justin Bayigga, Emily Nanziri and Ali Ngaimoko and middle distance runner Jimmy Adar.

The federation is in talks with the Uganda Olympic Committee for more slots on the team.

Meanwhile, Ugandan athletes have been urged to emulate the dedication of Africa Senior Athletics gold medallist Sarah ‘Number One’ Nambawa.

The call was made by Ndejje University Vice Chancellor Michael Ssennyimba at Nambawa’s welcome party organised by the university and the national university sports federation at Hotel Africana Wednesday. He commended the athlete for using her own resources to secure an air-ticket to Nairobi.

Assistant commissioner for physical education Omara Apitta pledged to refund the money she used for her air ticket.
