THE United States has issued terrorism indictments against 14 people charged with aiding Somalia’s Al-Shabaab rebels. They include 12 suspects said to be either in Somalia or at large.

Accused of terrorism and funding terrorist activities, they were charged in different courts in Minnesota, California and Alabama in absentia.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has since offered huge sums for their arrest. They are Abdikadir Ali Abdi, 19, Abdislan Hussein Ali, 21, Cabdulaaahi Ahmed Faraax, 33, Farah Mohamed Beledi, 26, and Abdiweli Yassin Isse, 26, all Americans of Somali origin.

Others are Ahmed Ali Omar, 27, Khalid Mohammad Abshir, 27, Zakaria Maruf, 31, Mohammed Abdullahi Hassan, 22, and Mustapha Ali Salat, 20.

In Rochester, Minnesota, the other two suspects (both women) Amina Farah Ali aged 33, and Hawo Mohammed Hassan, 63, both American citizens of Somali origin, were on Thursday charged with soliciting door-to-door donations for Al-Shabaab.

The indictments covered two Americans, who have emerged as senior al-Shabaab figures. Omar Hammami, a native of Alabama, is a key player in recruiting supporters in the US and has been compared to the American cleric, Anwar al Awlaki, in Yemen.
