WITH DR. GLORIA NDAGIRE

Dear Doctor,
I had a cough last week and was given amoxyl. My health improved, but I developed chest pain two days ago. My family said I might have TB. I am worried, what should I do?
Ruth

Dear Ruth,
Lately, tuberculosis is common. It affects the lungs and can spread to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, it can be fatal. Signs and symptoms include cough that lasts for more than three weeks and excessive sweating especially at night.

Others are a fever in the evening, unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite. These symptoms are, however, not considered in isolation. Usually a person with TB has one or more of these in addition to a long-standing cough.

For example, if one has no appetite or if they lose weight because of stress, it is not likely that they are suffering from TB.

Chest pain can also be caused by pneumonia. Other causes are poor posture and inflammation of the small joints in the chest bones. Pain associated with irritation of the stomach is also often described as chest pain. You should not worry, but see a doctor for treatment.

I cant’ conceive

QDear Doctor,
I have a four-year-old child. It is almost three years since I stopped using the depo provera contraceptive, but I have failed to conceive. What can I do?

A Dear Janat,
The depo provera injection, also called Injecta plan, is a family planning method administered on the upper arm.

Even after being on the injection for that period, many women return to their normal fertility in three months, though a few extend to six months.

Rarely will a woman go up to one year. It is unlikely that your failure to conceive is as a result of the injectaplan more so if you have been having your periods. See a gynaecologist.

Blocked tubes are one of the causes of secondary infertility.
