THE Police is holding a 25-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her newborn in a pit-latrine.

Alice Nanfuma, 25, of Kiruddu Zone on Salaama road in Makindye, reportedly got rid of the infant moments after giving birth.

A neighbour, Justine Dambi, discovered the baby at around 7:00am, after finding blood on the latrine floor and hearing the baby crying inside the pit. She alerted the neighbours and the grandparents who called the Police.

A four-man rescue team from the Police fire brigade pulled the baby out of the latrine.

Neighbours said Nanfuma had been secretive about the pregnancy and constantly denied being pregnant even after her grandmother noticed her bulging tummy.

Nanfuma was found hiding in the house with blood on her legs

So far, no one has claimed paternity of the child as Nanfuma is said to have been very quiet and withdrawn with a few friends.

The baby is receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital, where Nafuma was forced to breastfeed her.

At the hospital, Nafuma quietly sobbed and ignored questions put to her. She is will be taken to Katwe Police Station to record a statement when the baby’s condition stabilises.

Nanfuma’s case is similar to that of 18-year-old Annet Nambalirwa, who strangled her 21-day-old twins and stuffed their bodies in a pit-latrine in Nsangi on the Kampala-Masaka highway.

Upon arrest, Nambalirwa, who denied choking her daughter and son, confessed that the babies were alive when she dumped them in the pit-latrine.

Nambalirwa, who is being held for murder, said the father of the children, only identified as Njagala, a hawker, abandoned her after she became pregnant and could not look after the babies.

More parents have confessed to killing their children, citing marital problems. Last year, Margaret Kasande of Kamwokya, a city suburb, strangled her three children.

In 2007, Abdallah Byekwaso of Kibaale district hacked to death his wife and six children before hanging himself. Only one of his children, a girl who was staying with a relative in a nearby village, survived.
