STUDENTS of Kamuli Girls’ College have requested the Government to buy them a school bus to save them from using wheelbarrows and boda bodas to ferry sick students to hospitals.

Led by the headgirl, Innocent Naluvule, the students observed that the nearest health centre is 1km away from the school.

“We lack transport and face difficulties in ferrying sick students to Nawanyago health centre, especially at night. We request the Government to get us a bus since this is a government school under the Universal Secondary Education programme,” she said.

Naluvule, a senior four student, also requested the Government to construct teachers’ quarters to house the teachers who stay far from school.

The students made the requests during the commissioning of electricity supply at the school by the deputy speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, on Friday.

Naluvule hailed Kadaga for her efforts in connecting the school to the power line in Nawanyago trading centre. She added that with power, their academic performance would improve.

Kadaga promised to lay strategies to ensure that the school gets a bus and also look into staff accommodation.

The LC5 chairman, Stephen Mubiru, urged parents to take their children to vocational institutes to learn skills for self-sustenance and reduce the rate of unemployment in Kamuli.

He revealed that the district plans to recruit 260 teachers for government-aided primary and secondary schools.

The headmistress, Irene Bagonza, said before acquiring power, the school used lanterns, generators and sometimes gas lamps, which was costly and inefficient. She added that with power, the situation would improve.
