AMELIA Kyambadde, the former Principal Private Secretary to President Yoweri Museveni, has joined the race for the post of NRM national treasurer. The incumbent is Ndawula Kaweesi, while the deputy is Singh Katongole.

Ndorwa East MP David Bahati, who is currently the NRM Caucus treasurer, is also eyeing the post.

Sources said over the weekend Amelia, as she is fondly called, was being fronted by influential people in the ruling party, as a more credible and dynamic candidate to oversee the party funds.

“She has worked closely with the party chairman, the chief fundraiser, and it’s believed that with her manning the coffers, there would be an improvement in the management of the party’s funds,” said the source that preferred anonymity.

President Museveni, the chairman of the ruling NRM, has reportedly given her a green light to contest for the post. Amelia has been the President’s longest serving PPS and they have been working together for the last 32 years.

Amelia declined to comment on her latest political aspirations. Sources close to her said she is for now focused on winning the party primaries.

We could neither reach Kaweesi and Singh and MP Bahati for a comment as their mobile phones were switched off yesterday.

Amelia is aspiring to become Mawokota North MP, where the incumbent is fellow NRM legislator, Peter Claver Mutuluza.

Already, Amelia has gained entry to the NRM delegates’ conference after she was elected unopposed as the Mpigi district NRM chairperson during the grassroots elections held on August 2.

The NRM convenes for a delegates’ conference from September 2 to 5 at Mandela National Stadium Namboole.
