National Sevens attract foreign teams

FOUR foreign rugby teams from Kenya and Tanzania will this year compete in the finals of the national sevens circuit at Mandela stadium, Namboole.

FOUR foreign rugby teams from Kenya and Tanzania will this year compete in the finals of the national sevens circuit at Mandela stadium, Namboole.

The Sevens circuit due September 4 to 25 will have four circuits in Entebbe, Makerere, Jinja before the final Circuit at Namboole.

According to rugby’s head of marketing, Martin Kasasira, the foreign teams will give Ugandan players exposure and the national sevens team preparation for the October Commonwealth games in New Delhi India.

Kasasira revealed this at a press briefing at the union secretariat in Lugogo where Hima cement committed sh40m to the event.

“Our focus is to develop sevens rugby to international level, that is why we are inviting four foreign teams to join the local clubs in the final circuit,” Kasasira explained.

Head of Hima Dennis Kashero said that his company is committed to developing Uganda’s rugby to another level.

“Our commitment cements the long lasting partnership with rugby and we hope to take sevens rugby to a bigger and better stage each year,” Kashero explained.

Hima has previously suppported Makerere Impis club and the Makerere 10’s tournament.

Twelve local clubs including Kobs, Makerere Impis, Pirates, Buffaloes, Rhinos, Entebbe Mongers, Summerkamp, Nile, Saracens and defending champions Heathens will battle for the two million cash prize at stake for the winner.
