The Indian Association of Uganda will raise sh1b to fund the newly-created Business Against Crime Association, Rajni Tailor, the chairman, revealed during a recent meeting at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

He said the association would rally the Indian and the general business community to contribute funds to the new security group, a private sector lobby created to fight terrorism.

Speaking at the function, the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, said he was disturbed by the rate at which Kampala has returned to complacency after the July 11 suicide bombing.

“We recently intercepted a bomb in a bus in town. Sadly, when we mount random inspections in entertainment and public places in Kampala, we find laxity in security in most cases. It is like nothing happened. We must stay vigilant,” Kayihura said, stressing that terrorists could strike again if given an opportunity.

Kaihura reminded the meeting attended by representatives of companies and corporations that they should buy good security equipment because the Government instituted a tax waiver on all security equipment after the 7/11 suicide bombing that killed about 80 people. “Make your business premise a hard and difficult target for terrorist,” Kaihura reiterated. The Business Against Crime Association was, however, criticised for putting emphasis on terrorism above other crimes rampant in Kampala and Uganda’s urban areas.
