THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) starts the search for its 2011 presidential flag-bearer today.

According to a press release issued yesterday, party members interested in various top party positions, including the position of presidential flag-bearer and party chairman, should submit their applications between today and Friday.

Although President Yoweri Museveni has not yet said he will run for the presidency again, the party’s top organs, the national executive committee (NEC) and the central executive committee (CEC), want him to be the party’s flag-bearer and also retain his position of party chairman.

Commissioner Lydia Wanyoto said candidates will be screened by the two committees. CEC is comprised of the national party leaders, while NEC is comprised of CEC plus district chairpersons and MPs.

Other key party positions which will be competed for are that of the secretary general, treasurer, regional vice-chairpersons, national vice-chairman, second national chairman, deputy secretary general, deputy treasurer, and chairpersons of the party leagues.

The leagues are the Women’s League, Entrepreneurs’ League, Elders League, Veterans League and the Workers League. Others are the league for People with Disabilities, Historical Leaders’ Forum and the Youth League.

The highly competitive positions include that of the secretary general with the incumbent being security minister Amama Mbabazi, against the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, trade minister Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Ssekikubo and academician Elijah Mushemeza. The candidates have been moving around the country canvassing for support.

Sources said former Principal Private Secretary Amelia Kyambadde wants to replace Ndawula Kaweesi as the party treasurer. Also cited in the same race is finance minister Syda Bumba.

State minister for health, James Kakooza, said he would vie for the position of deputy treasurer. He will tussle the incumbent Singh Katongole.

Beatrice Wabudeya and Gen. Jeje Odongo have expressed interest in the position of vice chairman for the eastern region, occupied by Michael Mukula.

Foreign affairs minister Sam Kuteesa and Hajji Abdu Nadduli want the position of vice-chairman for Buganda, which Bukenya is holding.

The party will hold primaries on August 30 and will elect the presidential flag-bearer and other national leaders from September 7 to 10.
