IF each Cranes player emulated Andrew Mwesigwa’s commitment to the national team, there would be no reason why Uganda wouldn’t dream of finally making the 2012 Nations Cup finals.

Experienced campaigners will tell you that qualifying for major championships demands commitment, passion, desire and Uganda’s Chinese-based defender Mwesigwa represents all.

He was the first professional to report for Cranes duty at Namboole Stadium yesterday on the first day of regrouping when just 14 out of the 18 local-based players reported.

Mike Sserumagga and Steven Bengo absconded. Ideally Bengo, whose unfitness levels are legendary, should have reported first.

“He (Mwesigwa) is such a committed player, a true professional and loyal servant. It is definitely good for the team,” Cranes assistant coach Moses Basena stated.

The rock-solid defender arrived in the country over the weekend to sort personal issues and was expected back for club duty in China yesterday.

“When he noticed the team was regrouping, he called and told us he would be in position to join the rest.

He talked to his club, something we (FUFA) couldn’t do because clubs are meant to release players just seven days before,” Cranes manager Crispus Muyinda revealed.

“His presence will lift the rest,” he added.

With Timothy Batabaire overlooked for the Angola fixture on September 4, Cranes boss Bobby Williamson will desperately count Mwesigwa’s presence against the well-built Palancas Negros in a must win game.
