More party members pick NRM poll forms

MORE officials of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have picked nomination forms for election to the various executive posts of the party.

MORE officials of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have picked nomination forms for election to the various executive posts of the party.

The party vice-chairman, Moses Kigongo, picked forms for the post he has held since 1986. He will face off with Deus Mwesigye, who picked his earlier.

Prof. Elijah Mushemeza of Bishop Stuart University picked forms for the post of secretary general. He has to fight for the post with Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, trade minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Sekikubo and the incumbent, Amama Mbabazi.

Mushemeza said the party needed a full-time secretary general. “You cannot have four jobs and be efficient.”

The NRM electoral commission chief, Lydia Wanyoto, said the exercise was going on smoothly.

Over 80 people have so far picked the forms. The exercise ends on Friday when aspirants return forms.

State House legal counsel Joy Kabatsi picked forms for the post of vice-chairperson for the central region.

Kabatsi has been active in the politics of Ssembabule but lost the district MP seat to Hanifa Kawooya.

Sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi will contest for the chairperson of the NRM workers’ league. He is one of the five workers’ MPs.

Kampala Central Division councillor Salim Uhuru picked forms for the post of national treasurer.

Nakaseke MP Rosemary Namayanja is set for the post of deputy NRM secretary general.

Rujumbura MP Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi is eyeing the leadership of the historicals league, while Mbale district chairman Benard Mujasi will vie for the elderly chair.

Micro-finance minister Ruth Nankabirwa and Bigiri MP Justine Lumumba are targeting the women’s league, while Kayunga MP Florence Naiga seeks re-election as head of the persons with disabilities.

Business mogul Hassan Basajjabalaba wants to be re-elected as head of the entrepreneurs’ league.

Abass Agaba, who has been head of the National Youth Council, picked forms to seek re-election.

The candidates names will be forwarded to the central executive committee for screening and finally to the national executive committee for approval. The NRM delegates’ conference is set for the first week of September.
