A sewer line that is being laid along Kafumbe-Mukasa Road in down-town Kampala, has delayed repair works on the road.

It is now over a year since the work was stopped, making the road impassable.

The Kampala City Council (KCC) mayor, Nassar Sebaggala, said the local government ministry stopped firms contracted by the city authority for the work, “ because the ministry wanted to first lay a sewer line in the area.”

Dotts Services is laying the sewer line.

KCC had hired Zzimwe Construction to fix the road for sh360m.
The local government minister, Adolf Mwesige, said he was not aware of the suspended road works on Kafumbe-Mukasa Road.
He referred this reporter to KCC and his permanent secretary.
Before the repair work was stopped, Zzimwe had dug up part of the road from the side of Katwe, making it impassable, especially when it rains.
Salim Uhuru, the area councillor, blamed the deteriorating state of the road and the delayed repair on poor planning and lack of co-ordination of projects by the local government ministry.

Uhuru said although the sewer line project was going on, the city engineer should ensure that the drainage system in the area is opened.

He advised the business community not to pay taxes to KCC, unless the road is worked on.

Recently the traders along this road had a strike but it has not saved the situation. The traders argue that they cannot easily transport their goods in and out of Balikudembe Market and this has affected their businesses.

The traders also claim that they no longer get customers because of the impassable road.
