ENERGY state minister Simon D’ujanga, who is the MP for Okoro county, as well as Akumu Catherine Mavenjina, the Woman MP for Zombo and Nebbi, lost the NRM primary elections yesterday.

It means that they will not be the party’s flag-bearer in next year’s general elections unless they opt to stand as independents. However, D’ujanga and Akumu conceded defeat and promised to support the winners.

Stanley Omwonya, a former education service commissioner, got 12,171 votes, his main challenger came second with 11,000 votes, while D’ujanga came third with 7,725 votes. John Pascal Wapokra, the LC5 chairman, came last.

D’ujanga, Stanley Omwonya and Alex Koi, a primary school teacher, stood in Okoro county.

Mavenjina was facing Grace Thorach and Grace Kwiocwiny. The party’s district registrar, Jimmy Kizito, announced the results at 3:30pm, throwing the supporters of the winners into wild celebrations.

However, tension had mounted earlier over reports that D’ujanga had sneaked in marked ballot papers to tip the election in his favour. But the situation was calmed down when George Ewai, the resident district commissioner for Zombo, personally participated in the counting of the votes.

The venue of the counting was also changed from the NRM offices for fear that polling officials may manipulate votes.

Meanwhile, the incumbent LC5 chairman of the district, Emmy Kizito Kakura, beat his main rival John Orwiny, the district NRM chairman, with a slim margin.

The chairman LC3 of Paidha town council, Vincent Onega, lost to Sam Abedo, the vice-chairperson of Zombo.
