A total of 420 guns, including an unspecified number of bullets, have been recovered after a three-month operation in Teso.

The arms are suspected to have been used by defunct rebel groups like the Uganda People’s Army and the Lord’s Resistance Army. They were recovered from Kumi, Soroti, Bukedea and Katakwi districts.

The UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson, Capt. Deo Akiiki, on Sunday said the firearms were recovered with the help of secret security agents. “Others were forcefully recovered from the criminals,” he noted.

Akiiki said a secret force had been deployed to report anyone suspected to be dealing in arms, adding that more would be deployed.

“A total of 140 guns have been recovered from civilians,” Akiiki observed. He said other arms were got from deserters and former arrow boys who were recruited to flush out rebel leader Joseph Kony.

Akiiki said the firearms were used in grabbing land, road ambushes, fights over women and murders. He cited cases in Bukedea district where a bus was ambushed on its way to Mbale and a shooting at a van belonging to Atutur Hospital recently.
