OVER 500 Karimojong households of the Jie and Dodoth ethnicity, who were recently resettled in Moruita Peace Camp on the Kotido-Kaabong road, will soon benefit from a tree planting project.

The project, spearheaded by Mercy-cops, a non-governmental organisation, aims at improving the environment in the region that had been degraded as a result of felling trees for charcoal and building.

Mercy-cops has donated 3,000 seedlings, including mvule, pine, mangoes and oranges.
“There is a high rate of environment degradation by the population,” Petero Ayen, a resident of Sidok sub-county, said.

He said there was need to sensitise women on the dangers of tree cutting.

“It’s the women who build huts, fortresses and burn charcoal for sale,” Ayen added.

The Karamoja peace and environment protection director, Bosco Akure, said environmental degradation was getting out of hand.

“There is need to plant more trees in Karamoja to protect the environment.

“The main challenge is to get the communities appreciate the importance of tree planting,” Akure said.

He appealed to the Karimojong to stop burning bushes during the dry season in order to have new grass for their livestock.
