THE Uganda Islamic Mission has donated items worth sh9m to inmates at Luzira Prison as part of the Idd el Fitr celebrations.

The items, which included rice, sugar, maize flour, cooking oil and water, were handed over by Sheikh Maulana Buyondo, the director general, to representatives of the Muslim inmates.

“In this holy month of Ramadhan, Muslims are encouraged to give to the needy so that they observe the fast without worrying about what they will eat or wear after the fast,” Buyondo noted.

He urged the prisoners to remain strong in the Islamic faith and bear in mind that they all belong to one faith.
The representatives of the prisoners called upon muslim leaders to donate tunics (kanzu), Korans and other Islamic literature to them to promote the religion.

Luzira Prison officers pledged to give the inmates freedom of worship.
Muslims all over the world have been fasting since August 11.

Idd celebrations today mark the end of the fasting period.
