The increased rate of HIV infections among married couples is likely to constrain the service delivery by The Aids Support Organisation (TASO), a specialist has said.

Dr. Daniel Bogere, the Tororo centre manager, explained that 1,309 new infections have been reported to the centre since January.

Bogere noted that the alarming number was likely to impact negatively on the over 10,000 current clients, of whom 4,000 are on anti-retroviral (ARVs) therapy.

He added that an additional 450 to 600 clients attend the centre clinic weekly. Bogere said TASO Tororo serves the districts of Busia, Bugiri, Butaleja and Tororo.

Speaking after the launch of the TASO last week, Bogere said the centre recently absorbed over 1,100 clients, formerly receiving treatment from the Centres for Disease Control. He said despite the increasing number of the clients, their resource basket had remained the same.

Bogere appealed to development partners and friends of TASO to extend financial support to the centre so that they can cope with the increasing number of clients.

He said the TASO week will focus on mass sensitisation and voluntary counseling and testing, targeting the ‘most at risk population’ that include commercial sex workers, the army, long distance truck drivers and married couples.

The TASO week is conducted a head of the annual general meeting on Saturday, whose theme is ‘Scaling up prevention among the married’.
