St. Mary’s Kisubi honours Kale Kayihura

FOUR old boys of St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), including the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, were on Sunday honoured by the school for their contribution in their professions.

FOUR old boys of St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), including the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, were on Sunday honoured by the school for their contribution in their professions.
Others were Victoria Medical Centre head Dr. George Mayanja, Entebbe Virus Research Institute boss Dr. Louis Mukwaya and Bro. Anthony Kyemwa, the school’s first African head teacher.
Kayihura was recognised for his struggle towards the attainment of peace and security in Uganda.
Receiving the award, Kayihura said: “This award means recognising public service. Had I known, I would have mobilised my whole family to witness this special moment in my life.â€
He urged the public to develop a culture of community policing to avert crime and the terrorist threat posed by the al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based militant group.
He said terrorists targeted ‘soft spots’ that had no security.
Reading his citation, Justice Joseph Mulenga, a retired Supreme Court judge, who is also Kayihura’s uncle, said his nephew surprised them when he joined the NRA bush war after completing his masters degree in 1981. Kayihura had attained a masters in law at the University of London.
Kayihura has served as the chief political commissar of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) and presidential envoy based in Juba, Southern Sudan, where he successfully co-ordinated the operations between the Sudan Armed Forces and the UPDF in the anti-LRA campaign.
Mayanja was awarded for his excellence in health. He worked in Zambia for two years, before going to the UK, where he served up to the level of registrar at the Great Portland Hospital for children and women in London.
Mukwaya, on the other hand, was honoured for his contribution to the malaria research.
