A consignment of about one tonne of immature Nile Perch was on Monday impounded on a passenger bus. The smoked fish, packed in sacks and boxes, was destined for Mpondwe market on the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border.

The fish loaded on a Kampala-Kasese bus, was seized at Rutoto trading centre on the Ishaka-Kasese highway. Anthony Rubeihayo, the Rubirizi district fisheries officer, said three suspects believed to be the owners of the fish have been detained. They were aboard the bus carrying the fish.

He identified the suspects as Alex Kigundu, 25, Abbas Kakembo, 30, both from Entebbe but residing at Kigungu fish landing site, and Jenipher Namusoke, a resident of Kasenyi fish landing site.

Rubeihayo said the passengers tipped off the Police.
